In 2023, Paris remained at the top of French Side Travel’s client favorite destinations list. It’s difficult not to be taken away with the beauty of the City of Light, and there is truly something to do for every type of traveler from couples looking for a romantic getaway, to history buffs, families and more.

French Side Travel clients especially enjoyed food tours and cooking classes in the French capital in 2023. Whether it was a private tour to discover the best breads and pastries in Montmartre, a wine and cheese tasting in the heart of a 17th century cellar, or a market tour, cooking class, and meal in the Latin Quarter, our clients learned plenty of interesting tidbits and left with full and happy stomachs!

It’s easy to see why sun-drenched Provence topped the French Side Travel client favorite destination list again in 2023. This truly striking area set between sea and mountains has it all. The foods and wines are among the best in the entire country, the region has a fascinating history and an incredible beauty, which inspired many famous artists.

Clients loved experiencing the world-renowned markets in Provence along with expert guides. They were treated to tastings of iconic products from the region – think tapenade, Calissons, honey, cheese and more, as well as fresh, seasonal produce picked by local growers that same morning. After a fabulous market picnic clients rounded out the day with a visit to a vineyard to meet with a passionate local winegrower for a cellar visit and tasting.

Another highlight was a unique private truffle hunting and tasting tour. Clients toured a Provençal truffle plantation and learned about the cultivation of truffles and the training of truffle dogs. They not only experienced hunting for France’s elusive “black gold” with trained hunters, but they also discovered wild herbs, vineyards, olive groves, and bee hives. The tour finished with a full truffle tasting: hors d’oeuvres with truffle ice cream and truffle honey, organic extra-virgin olive oil, truffle oil, and truffle salt, all paired with Champagne.

The sparkling French Riviera, or Côte d’Azur, is a true paradise. The illusive area is a seamless mix of authentic and local beauty as well as unmistakable glitz and glamour.

One of the most popular places to visit is Cannes thanks to its international reputation. Known for being a modern, cosmopolitan, and fashionable place, it has also lovingly preserved its roots and its traditions. Clients love seeing the old town. In 2023 they visited the ramparts, the Musée de la Castre, the square tower, and the church. They admired the view over the city, the port, the Croisette, the Iles de Lérins, the Bay of Cannes, and the Forville market with its rows of food shops. A stroll around Forville market is like exploring all of Provence, taking a delicious journey steeped in the atmosphere of the South.

Another gorgeous stop includes the quaint village of Grasse, known as the world’s perfume capital. Producing over two-thirds of France’s natural aromas, it is a leader in the industry. The old town is the highlight of Grasse. It has numerous ancient buildings and a great deal of character. Once an unassuming fishing village, Saint Tropez is now known for luxurious yachts, sunbathing, and exclusive boutiques. In the 19th century, Impressionist painters such as Marquet, Signac, and Matisse immortalized the city in their beautiful works. The most picturesque area of this city is its historic center, known as La Ponche. The small alleyways and charming cobblestone lanes adorned with small souvenir shops, cafés, and restaurants are ideal for strolling.

In 2023, French Side Travel clients showed an increased interest in Champagne. Since it is just 45 minutes by train from Paris to the Champagne region, it’s the perfect addition to a trip. There are hundreds of Champagne producers in the region ranging from small family growers to prestigious houses like Ruinart, Moët & Chandon, and Dom Pérignon.

Reims, the capital of Champagne and the City of Kings makes a great base from which to explore the vineyards. A visit to the Veuve Clicquot house and its wine-cellars is always a client highlight. There’s more to Reims than just bubbles, however. Don’t miss seeing the Notre-Dame cathedral, one of France’s most visually-stunning and historically-important churches. It has an unrivaled collection of Art-Deco architecture mixed with Gothic monuments.

Normandy

The most popular excursion for French Side Travel clients in 2023 was a visit to the World War II D-Day landing beaches and memorials in Normandy. It was in this part of Normandy where thousands of brave allied troops gave their lives to liberate France, and eventually Europe.

Clients particularly enjoyed private guided tours led by passionate guides to explore the moving sites that hosted the pivotal battles. Two especially powerful places of remembrance include the moving and solemn American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer and the Pointe du Hoc, with largely untouched rugged cliffs and bomb craters, bunkers, and casements still visible.

Before leaving the house in the morning, we often give ourselves a little spritz of our favorite perfume or cologne. Albeit a simple gesture, this custom of perfuming ourselves dates even long before Coco created her iconic Chanel No. 5. We’re sharing the history and the secrets behind French perfume making that lie in the southern town of Grasse.

The Secrets of French Perfume Making

History of Global Perfume Making

Long before electricity, indoor plumbing and even France’s first Republic, perfume existed and played an integral part in the culture. To understand the history of perfume, we must travel back to the Middle East, namely Egypt, around 7000 B.C., where archaeologists have uncovered perfume and cosmetic vases, according to the Museum of Grasse. 

Biblical literature shares the story of Mary Magdalene pouring expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet. Researchers have tried recreating Mendesian perfume, which was popular during the time of Cleopatra, according to Smithsonian Magazine. Millennia later, our perfume-making techniques and conservation has changed but have reigned in pop culture all the same.

History of French Perfume

The country of France is filled with fragrances: from idyllic lavender fields to sweet honey, French nature is to be experienced with each sense. 

The southern French town of Grasse is home to the International Perfume Museum. The museum was inaugurated in 1989 and details the history and craftsmanship of the perfume industry. Although Grasse is now known as the global perfume capital, it wasn’t always recognized for its pleasant fragrances. 

During the Middle Ages, this French town was known for its leather making, and glove makers tried to fight off the bad odors of dead animals, according to an article in NPR. “The tanners switched to full-time perfume making after taxes on leather rose too high,” says Eleanor Beardsley in her article. “The hillside springs they once channeled to clean the hides were instead used to distill perfume and water the fields of flowers.”

Later on, perfume would also prove to be political. Born in the late 1800s, François Coty launched his perfume manufacturing business and went on to use these profits to support his newspaper ventures promoting his right wing political agenda, according to Britannica.

The 2023 Grape Harvest in France

It’s an exciting time of year for grape growers and wine lovers alike as the vendanges, the period of grape harvesting, has officially begun. Each year is slightly different depending on the region, mother nature, and the grapes themselves. Typically the vendanges begin in late August and can last through October. Read on to learn more about the process, how to take part, and how to celebrate the 2023 grape harvest in France.

When is the Harvest in France this Year?

Each prefecture must lift the ban on grape harvesting (lever le ban des vendanges) before picking begins. This date is typically about 100 days after the vine flowers. Ultimately, the harvesting date depends on the grapes. Wine growers monitor levels of sugar and acidity as well as the amount of tannins, especially for red wines.

Vendanges typically begin in late August in southern parts of France like Corsica and Provence and can last through October. Severe frosts make the date later and heatwaves make it earlier. Harvesting typically lasts for about 15 days, depending on the size of the vineyard.

Bordeaux entered the harvest period on August 16th with crémant, which makes up 1% of their production. Next, they’ll start harvesting grapes for white wines. The first grapes for red wines in Bordeaux will follow likely in mid-September. At the end of September the bulk of grapes for red wines will be harvested. In Burgundy, the harvest period will begin at the end of August in the Jura region. The Champagne harvest period is expected during the first ten days of September.

How Grapes are Harvested in France

Grapes are largely harvested by hand. Some regions like Champagne even require it. This means bringing in some extra help – about 300,000 people in order to cover the approximately 750,000 hectares (1.9 million acres) of vineyards in France. It’s a seasonal job open to anyone older than 16 and is popular among students.

In some cases, machines harvest the grapes. Machines increase productivity and can harvest about 200 times more grapes per day than a person. They also run day and night, no matter the weather conditions. However, machines are less accurate and can sometimes damage the delicate grapes. Machines also require sorting to remove any grapes with undesirable qualities.

There are many different harvest festivals throughout France. One of the first is the Festivini Festival of Food and Wine in the Loire Valley. Perhaps the most well-known is the Montmartre Grape Harvest Festival in Paris from October 11th through 15th. More than 40 bars and restaurants take part in the four day event which includes activities like concerts, entertainment, tastings of regional and local products, dances, walks, special exhibits and more.

The top spots to experience France’s lavender fields

In early summer, Provence’s countryside is made magical by its blooming lavender fields. They’re an iconic site that are well-worth timing your trip around. The vibrant violet color signals the changing of the seasons, the arrival of Provence’s buzzing cicadas, and long, hot summer days.  The perfectly lined lavender rows are a feast for the eyes and are wonderfully fragrant. If you’re really lucky you might even catch one next to a sunflower field! Every year, French Side Travel gets requests from travelers to visit France’s lavender fields. What you need to know

Timing:

It’s important to keep in mind that lavender is a seasonal phenomenon. The timing can depend on the year’s weather, but generally, there’s a four to six-week window that’s ideal. Plan to come between the mid June and late July. Which fields are at their best will depend on when you’re here and the fields’ elevation. Fields in southern and lower-lying areas are harvested by mid July.  After early August, you’ll need to wait until the following year. 

Getting around:

The fields are spread out and located far from the city centers. A car is required. Depending on your preference, we recommend either a rental car or a tour with a local chauffeur guide. Talk with our destination experts to book the right one for you. 

Whether on your own or with a guide, exploring by car allows you to see the fields when they’re at their most beautiful. Early morning or late evening make for better photographs with long shadows, golden light, and colorful skies. You’re more likely to  avoid overcrowding too, which is perfect if you want the fields all to yourself!

Where to go:

For visitors to Provence, there are three main areas to consider for seeking out lavender: Valensole, Luberon, and the Plateau d’Albion. 

Valensole:

The Valensole Plateau is France’s biggest and most famous lavender region. Over an area of more than 300 square miles, photograph lavender fields, visit farms, and tour distilleries. The medieval village of Valensole makes for a perfect stop for lunch or souvenir shopping.

Valensole is just over an hour from Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. From Cannes, Saint-Tropez, or Nice it’s a two to three-hour drive. 

A tip for nature lovers: Valensole is on the border of the Verdon Natural Regional Park.  The park is home to the Gorges du Verdon, one of Europe’s deepest canyons. Known as the Grand Canyon of Europe, it’s easy to see why. At its highest point, the limestone walls soar almost 2,300 feet above the turquoise Durance River. It’s a paradise for hikers. The village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is undoubtably one of Provence’s loveliest. Nestled between two cliffs, a stream and waterfall run through its center. Moustiers is also known for its fine faïence ceramics. They make for fantastic souvenirs.

The Luberon:

We’ve previously written about the amazing Luberon Valley. If you come during the summer, the colorful lavender fields make it all the more special. The most memorable lavender field surrounds the Cistercian Abbaye-de-Senaque. Lavender adds to the region’s rainbow of colors – red and orange ochres, yellow sunflowers, and omnipresent greens. There may be fewer fields here, they have the advantage of being in bloom earlier than Valensole and Sault.

Looking for a lesser-known spot in the Luberon? We love the Plateau des Claparèdes near the village of Bonnieux. Besides its lovely fields, you can visit traditional stone bories (cabins) while there. They are constructed without cement and have been used here for centuries by farmers and herders. 

These lavender fields are also the closest to Avignon and Aix-en-Provence. You can reach them in forty five minutes from either base.

Sault and the Plateau d’Albion:

Worried that you’ll miss the lavender season? The area around the village of Sault is a wonderful place to visit. Due to its higher elevation, the lavender here is harvested later than its southern counterparts. You can catch blooming lavender fields as late as early August. The village of Sault holds its Fête de la Lavande every August 15th to celebrate the end of the harvest.

You’ll need about one hour and fifteen minutes from Avignon or one hour and forty five minutes from Aix-en-Provence to reach here. 

Our Favorite Corsica Tours

Where to stay:

Visitors can certainly see lavender fields as a day trip from Provence’s larger cities: Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, and Marseille. Côte-d’Azur hotspots like Nice, Cannes, and Saint-Tropez are further, but still doable for a determined day-tripper. 

If you can, though, we suggest lingering a bit longer. Maximize your stay in the Provençal countryside. Consider spending a couple of nights in the Luberon. The towns of Forcalquier or Manosque on the eastern side of the park are great for lavender. This will give you more time in the fields.

Outside of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur région, you can also see wonderful lavender fields in the neighboring Drôme and Ardèche. These are further off-the-beaten path, but can be wonderful for those looking for a more authentic, or secluded experience.

We suggest Airelles’ Gordes la Bastide and its connected La Maison de Constance villa.

This 5-star luxury hotel and spa is in lovely Gordes. The perched village is one of Provence’s most beautiful, complete with 12th-century ramparts, a castle, and expansive views over the valley below. The hotel itself was a former mansion and it retains every ounce of its former charm: stonework, molding, exposed wood, and vaulted ceilings all surrounded by century-old olive trees and soaring cypresses. And, yes, the Abbaye-de-Senaque’s postcard Lavender field is just a hop away. 

The refined rooms are fully equipped, and most offer a view of the valley and the mountains. The chic Sisley spa has an indoor swimming pool, a hammam, and a fitness facility. The establishment boasts multiple onsite dining options and a bar.

If you’re looking for something more secluded Homanie’s Drôme Provençale is a wonderful option.
