The exhibit is organized chronologically throughout the Fondation Louis Vuitton and includes Rothko’s early paintings as well as the abstract works for which he is well known today. From October 18th through April 2nd.

Naples in Paris at Musée du Louvre

In order to encourage collaborative efforts among museums in Europe, the Musée du Louvre is hosting the Museo di Capodimonte through early January 2024. The “Naples in Paris” exhibit highlights 60 major Italian treasures from the Museo di Capodimonte in two different parts of the Louvre. This collaboration is an incredible opportunity to view masterpieces from the Capodimonte collection alongside the Louvre’s collection. Through January 8th.

Recently opened on October 3rd, “Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise: The Final Months” is the first exhibit dedicated to the works created by Vincent Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise, just outside of Paris, during the final two months of his life. Van Gogh had hoped to find a new creative energy in Auvers-sur-Oise, and in only two months produced 74 paintings and 33 drawings, including several iconic works. Through February 4th.

Amedeo Modigliani: A Painter and His Dealer at Musée de l’Orangerie

One of the most crucial moments in Amedeo Modigliani’s career is perhaps when he met his eventual dealer, Paul Guillaume in Paris nearly a century ago. Prior to meeting Guillaume, Modigliani had been almost exclusively working on sculptures for five years. Guillaume encouraged Modigliani to return to painting and helped to promote his works among the literary and artistic circles in Paris and the United States. This exhibit looks at the special relationship held between artist and dealer through a selection of Modigliani’s iconic works. Through January 15th.

Treasures in Black & White at the Petit Palais

Printed works are at the core of the Petit Palais’ collection thanks to its founders, brothers Auguste and Eugène Dutuit. The elder Dutuit brother, Eugène, collected over 12,000 original prints in his lifetime including works by Albrecht Dürer, Rembrant and Goya. Later in the Petit Palais’ history, curator Henry Lapauze added contemporary prints, specifically those in color, to the collection by artists including Buhot, Bracquemond, Chéret, Steinlen, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Visitors can discover a technical, iconographic, and stylistic overview of printmaking from the 15^th to the 20^th century. Through January 14th.

Azzedine Alaïa: Couturier and Collector at Palais Galliera

Azzedine Alaïa‘s passion for both fashion and history led him to amass an incredible collection of clothing and costumes. This one-of-a-kind exhibit showcases Alaïa’s heritage collection, which he started in 1968 after Cristóbal Balenciaga closed his fashion house. The collection, first seen after the designer’s death, is now being exhibited for the first time. Visitors can disover 140 exceptional pieces from designers like Gabrielle Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Christian Dior, and Thierry Mugler that Alaïa collected in total secrecy. Through January 21st.

What To See During The European Heritage Days 2023

Each September during the European Heritage Days (Journées du Patrimoine) visitors and residents alike have the unique opportunity to discover museums, monuments, and private spaces that are otherwise closed to the public. These days provide a fantastic look into some of France’s most spectacular sites. This year, the Journées du Patrimoine are September 16th and 17th. The French Ministry of Culture created the Journées du Patrimoine 40 years ago. They take place on the third weekend of September and see approximately 12 million visitors annually. One of the purposes of the Journées du Patrimoine is to highlight the unique stories, histories, and collections of the 17,000 participating sites. These places include embassies, theaters, hospitals, schools, castles, factories and more.

Because of their popularity, the European Heritage Days can involve some time spent queuing in line. Since the pandemic, there has been a shift towards using a reservation system. While not every place has adopted this system yet, more and more places are starting to.

Paris and Île-de-France

You’ll find options galore during the Journées du Patrimoine in Paris and the Île de France region. Some perennially popular places to visit include the Elysée Palace, Hôtel Matignon, the French Senate, and the Institut de France. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to explore places like the National Assembly, the greenhouses in the Luxembourg Gardens, and the Oratoire du Louvre.

Carved out at the beginning of the 12th century, the monolithic church is underground and only visible thanks to its bell tower that reaches 68 meters high. In Sarlat, many places that are normally closed to the public will be open including the Lanterns of the Dead and private mansions. Don’t miss Saturday night’s “Heritage Under the Stars” in Sarlat to discover the city’s alleys illuminated by candles.

It’s an exciting time of year for grape growers and wine lovers alike as the vendanges, the period of grape harvesting, has officially begun. Each year is slightly different depending on the region, mother nature, and the grapes themselves. Typically the vendanges begin in late August and can last through October. Read on to learn more about the process, how to take part, and how to celebrate the 2023 grape harvest in France.

When is the Harvest in France this Year?

Each prefecture must lift the ban on grape harvesting (lever le ban des vendanges) before picking begins. This date is typically about 100 days after the vine flowers. Ultimately, the harvesting date depends on the grapes. Wine growers monitor levels of sugar and acidity as well as the amount of tannins, especially for red wines.

Vendanges typically begin in late August in southern parts of France like Corsica and Provence and can last through October. Severe frosts make the date later and heatwaves make it earlier. Harvesting typically lasts for about 15 days, depending on the size of the vineyard.

Bordeaux entered the harvest period on August 16th with crémant, which makes up 1% of their production. Next, they’ll start harvesting grapes for white wines. The first grapes for red wines in Bordeaux will follow likely in mid-September. At the end of September the bulk of grapes for red wines will be harvested. In Burgundy, the harvest period will begin at the end of August in the Jura region. The Champagne harvest period is expected during the first ten days of September.

How Grapes are Harvested in France

Grapes are largely harvested by hand. Some regions like Champagne even require it. This means bringing in some extra help – about 300,000 people in order to cover the approximately 750,000 hectares (1.9 million acres) of vineyards in France. It’s a seasonal job open to anyone older than 16 and is popular among students.

In some cases, machines harvest the grapes. Machines increase productivity and can harvest about 200 times more grapes per day than a person.
