The Gros Horloge (Great Clock) is emblematic of the city and dates back to the 16th century. Rouen also has several notable museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Ceramics, and a Natural History Museum.

D-Day Landing Beaches and Memorials

d-day landing beaches and memorials must-see normandy for history buffs

One of the most-requested tours in Normandy is to the powerful D-Day landing beaches and memorials. Along with your expert guide, you’ll travel back in time to the different emblematic places of Operation Overlord. Explore the D-Day landing beaches and gain insight into World War II history. Learn the names of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Visits begin at the American Cemetery at Colleville-Sur-Mer, located on the top of the cliff overlooking the famous Omaha Beach. Omaha Beach is known for being the most devastating but glorious moment of the Normandy invasion, marking the beginning of the end of World War II. You will also get to see the Pointe du Hoc, an ominous piece of land jutting into the English Channel. It provided an elevated vantage point from which large German guns with a range of 15 miles could deliver fire upon both Omaha Beach and Utah Beach. The neutralization of these guns by the allied forces was the key to victory.

Visit Sainte-Mère-Église, one of the first French villages to be liberated. It is famous for a paratrooper who remained attached to the bell tower of the church. Close to the church stands the Airborne Museum. There, you will learn more about the role the paratroopers played in Operation Overlord. The final stop will be Utah Beach, the westernmost beach in the combat zone, where 23,200 American soldiers landed on D-Day.

Fabulous Mont-Saint-Michel

Tides permitting, it is possible to take a half-day guided walk in the bay to discover the beautiful Mont-Saint-Michel from a different perspective.

Claude Monet lived in Giverny, which is not far from Paris but technically in Normandy, for 43 years until his death in 1926. It remains a popular destination in Normandy for history buffs, art lovers, and garden fanatics thanks to the opportunity to visit his house and garden that inspired his most prominent paintings.

The garden is open from April through October and boasts a stunning array of flowers and willow trees. See the very pond where Monet painted the famous Nymphéas (Water Lilies). Monet was a gardener as well as an artist, using his creative eye to arrange and plant the flowers himself. The garden bursts with color and light, which Monet so wonderfully depicted in his paintings. Spring is a wonderful time to visit when daffodils, irises, peonies, nasturtiums, roses and narcissuses are in full bloom.

The interior of the charming pink house remains true to what the rooms looked like during Monet’s time. Visit Monet’s studio, reading room, and vibrant yellow kitchen. The tranquil Arcachon Bay emerged as a luxury retreat for Bordeaux’s upper class in the 19th century. The elegant Belle Époque villas, rejuvenating spas, and expansive golden sandy beaches make it a favorite of the French, although it is still very under the radar for foreigners.

The main attractions in Arcachon are the miles of sandy beaches, the vibrant town center and its markets, and the architecture of the Ville d’Hiver that boasts rows of Belle Époque mansions. There’s an eccentric mix of Neoclassical, Neo-Gothic, Colonial, and Swiss Chalet styles of architecture.

Arcachon’s beaches are inside the Arcachon Bay, which shelters them from the violent Atlantic waves. This makes it a wonderful area for families with children. Rent a bike and head south through beaches and seaside towns towards Biscarrosse for waves, surfing, and body-boarding. Just behind the beach is the Landes des Gascogne Regional Natural Park, an expansive pine tree forest and wetland area.

The seafood restaurants in Arcachon are of course particularly popular. You’ll find everything from classic bistrot fare like moules frites (mussels with fries) along the beach to fine dining restaurants a few blocks into town. Don’t miss the oysters, they’re regarded among the best in the world.

Discover the American Riviera and Italian Riviera, All from the French Riviera

italian riviera

For lovers of art, culture, and history, there’s nothing better than discovering the story behind the American Riviera. During the roaring twenties, a whole generation of American writers and artists left the US for Europe. For more than a decade, many of them considered the French Riviera their second home. These Americans created the summer season on the Riviera in 1925 and thus, changed the character of the seaside with the development of Juan Les Pins, the construction of dozens of villas, the beach and sun culture, and the creation of the largest film festival in Cannes. You’ll get to see the famous Belle Rives Hotel, where Fitzgerald once lived with his wife and daughter. History fanatics will enjoy the Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial near Draguignan which commemorates the military who fell during Operation Dragoon, the liberation of the South of France in August 1944.

Just past Menton is the Italian Riviera. It didn’t take long for Monet to fall in love with the Italian Riviera, only a few minutes in fact. Spend a day following the footsteps of the great master to discover the magic of the Italian side of the Riviera which, as you will discover, starts before the border. Some of the highlights include Old Bordighera, Monet’s painting path in Bordighera, and Dolceacqua Village where you’ll stop at a local winery for a visit and tasting.
