Life in the 18th Century in France
It’s no exaggeration to say that the 18th century forever changed the course of France. Come every July 14th in France, the entire country stops to celebrate its independence day dating back to 1789. But long before the 1789 French Revolution, France was flourishing at the turn of the 18th century. Nicknamed the “Sun King,” Louis XIV was king at the turn of the century. His reign was nicknamed Le Grand Siècle, or the Great Century, according to Versailles.
The Enlightenment movement also played a pivotal role. The 18th century produced some of the greatest philosophers of our time: Montesquieu, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Denis Diderot to name a few. This century also saw the end of the monarchy and the installation of the First République.
And the 1700s also included the life and legacy of a certain Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. France took a turn at the end of the 18th century as these two royals headed to the guillotine, and a new political era began.
This historically rich era demands to be discovered, and with French Side Travel, you can explore the ins and outs of the 18th century. Whether you’re more interested in fashion or history, lifestyle or chocolate, here’s our 18th century-inspired Paris itinerary.

Walking down the streets of Paris today, you’ll see many sporting Longchamp bags, Veja sneakers and Sézane blouses. But in the 1700s, fashion looked wildly different. Paris’ fashion museum Palais Galliera features various exhibits on fashion over the years. But now through July, they’re showcasing their exhibit “Fashion in the 18th Century: A Fantasized Legacy.” Think big hair, corsets and floral patterns. If you want to explore the 18th century in a different light, this fashion exhibit provides a peek into a different epoch. “In a context of political and social upheaval, the eighteenth century appeared as the epitome of elegance and a lost paradise that evoked a strong sense of nostalgia,” according to the museum.
