Private guided driving tour of Basque vineyards

Your driver-guide will pick you up from your accommodation. You will start with a visit to Espelette, a lovely village on the border of the province of Labourd & Basse Navarre. You will be introduced to the history of Basque country and its provinces. It is famous for its variety of capsicum (dried red peppers). You can see them hanging outside many of the houses and shops in the village during summer. Navarre. This is not just a historical boundary but also a geological one, as the landscape changes and we enter a mountainous area.

You will then visit an orchard and Basque cider maker, who will explain the secrets of this immemorial beverage made from the oldest breeds of apples known as Sagarnoa. Known as the secret weapon of sailors, it has been a tradition since antiquity. You can savor this bitter and dry flavor, consumed more like a wine than a refreshing beverage.

Next, you will explore the city and visit Domaine Brana, a veritable institution among Irouléguy PDO estates. You will learn more about this wine’s particularities and history and participate in a tasting session. A visit to Saint Jean Pied de Port, a magnificent 12th-century bastide town, capital of Lower Navarre, and a landmark pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela will allow you to stroll its steep pedestrian streets.

Stop in one of the multiple restaurants to enjoy some of the local specialties: Tapas, Pintxos, Anchovies, Charcuterie and Txakoli, your guide will introduce you to Basque gastronomy and culinary traditions

You will continue to the village of Irouléguy, renowned for its vineyards and estates. They were initially dedicated to the monks of the Spanish monastery of Roncesvalles and the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela. Between history and tasting, this stopover will delight the curious and gourmets alike.

Finally, you will stop by Saint Etienne de Baïgorry, a splendid village in Lower Navarre, where you will admire this province’s changing landscapes and architecture nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
