Day 6: Arles

Arles is packed full of Roman and medieval sites, many included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Few cities offer so many spectacular sites in such a small place. This included the splendid Roman arena, amphitheater, the ruins of the forum, and more. Painter Vincent Van Gogh immortalized Arles, and you’re sure to spot a few familiar sites. The city’s cultural scene is vibrant with events and festivals that attract visitors from all over the world.

As you stroll along the bank of the Rhône River, your guide will show off the splendid Place de la République and the Saint-Trophime Cathedral. The old Hôtel-Dieu hospital was featured in many of Van Gogh’s paintings. Today it boasts a charming inner courtyard and is known as the Espace Van Gogh cultural center.

Suggestion : Alyscamps and Saint Trophime church

The Church of St. Trophime (Trophimus) is former cathedral built between the 12th century and the 15th century in the city centre of Arles. It is an important example of Romanesque architecture, and the sculptures over the portal, particularly the Last Judgement, and the columns in the adjacent cloister, are considered some of the finest examples of Romanesque sculpture.

The church contains rich groups of art from other periods which include several important carved Late Roman sarcophagi, reliquaries from various periods, and Baroque paintings. The church has been used to hold items originally from other churches or religious houses in the region that were dispersed in the French Revolution or at other times.

Les Alyscamps is a site imbued with historical and religious importance which was once one of the most famous necropolises of the ancient world. Originally an Ancient Roman necropolis where prominent figures were laid to rest, most of the thousands of strewn sarcophagi that crowd together actually date back to medieval times.

Today, Les Alyscamps is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing.
