This famous fortress, classified historical monument since 1926, standing on a rocky island off the coast of Marseille, was immortalized by Alexandre Dumas in The Count of Monte Cristo as the prison where the novel’s hero, Edmond Dantès, was incarcerated before ultimately escaping.

The castle was built by François I in 1524 and over the centuries, it gained a fearsome reputation as many opponents of royal power were jailed and died in the fortress. The Castle has been perfectly preserved and is one of the most impressive historical sites on the Mediterranean coastline.

Today, we can still see on the walls inscriptions, traces of the passage of some prisoners. The last prisoners left Château d’If in 1914. Then, during the Second World War, the German army invaded the castle.

Enjoy a private boat ride from the Vieux Port of Marseille to the island where the castle stands and where you will meet with your guide.
