The medieval city of Carcassonne was built on the ruins of an old Roman fortress and found itself at the center of the crusade against the Cathars, powerful local heretics that were wiped out by the Catholic Church and the King of France in the 13th century. After the settlements at the foot of the city were destroyed, King St Louis authorized the local inhabitants to build a new town in 1245: this became known as the Bastide Saint Louis. Today, Carcassonne is renowned across the globe thanks to its two UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Medieval City and the Canal du Midi.

Once inside Carcassonne old town you are treated to a maze of winding, cobbled streets, and lots of wide-eyed tourists. There are 52 towers and two miles of double, concentric walls encircling this unique fortification. A walk along the battlements provides wonderful views of the town of Carcassonne and the flat plains of the Languedoc region.

Starting in Nice and ending in the incredibly picturesque little port town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, you’ll be treated to breathtaking scenery to remember. You can count 2 hours to walk from the port of Nice to the port of Villefranche. This route is so beautiful that you can make several stops to snap some photos.

This walking path which is accessible to all, offers superb views of the Bay of Nice and its turquoise water. No need to be an experienced sportsman but still… in good condition! It is also preferable to take this walk in the morning because the sun shines brightly at noon, even in the winter.

You can consider bringing a water bottle, footwear and a cap. The walkway is well planned out, indeed, there are stone benches between each cove for resting or picnicking.
