Day 1: Avignon

Suggestion: Explore Avignon, “La Cite des Papes”

Stroll the boutique-lined streets and vibrant squares, dine in some excellent restaurants and see the impressive medieval wall that encircles the old city.

The main attraction in Avignon is another of Provence’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Palais des Papes. It’s one of the largest medieval Gothic buildings in Europe, former home to nine successive popes during the 14th century.

It took less than 20 years to build this immense religious structure with imposing walls and four impressive towers. Tours take visitors through 25 rooms. Must-see rooms include the Consistoire (Audience Room), the Grande Chapelle (Great Chapel), the Grand Tinel (Banquet Hall), and the private papal apartments. The views from the towers are the most sublime place to take in the city, the Rhône River and the famous Pont d’Avignon (Pont Saint-Bénézet).

The Pont d’Avignon is a testament to the exciting history of the capital of Vaucluse. Built between 1177 and 1185, the Saint-Bénezet Bridge, known as the “Pont d’Avignon,” once connected Avignon with Villeneuve-les-Avignon. After extensive repeated damage from war and flooding, only four of the original 22 arches remain today. When it was built it was the only link over the Rhone River between Lyon and the Mediterranean Sea.

Sample the Papalines d’Avignon, chocolate specialties made with aromatic oregano liqueur from Mont Ventoux. They are handmade and only sold by shops affiliated with the Vaucluse master confectioners. Five tons are sold each year! The asparagus is worth trying too during the spring season. It’s widely celebrated in Avignon – nearly every menu in town has fresh asparagus soup, roasted green asparagus, or the white variety lightly sautéed and served with sauce.

Day 2: Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Half-day private driver at disposal

Shared tasting at Clos du Calvaire

Enjoy a guided tasting in our cellar, nestled in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard. This horizontal tasting offers a journey through our winemaking and aging methods, highlighting the diversity and unique character of the appellation’s terroirs.

You’ll also discover the history of our family estate, where five generations have passed down their expertise. A moment of sharing and discovery, with stunning views of the vines and the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Day 3: Aix-en-Provence

Gourmet Walking Tour of Aix-en-Provence

Join a local foodie for a unique taste of the lifestyle of magical Aix-en-Provence on a gourmet walking tour of the city. You’ll walk through historic golden streets, dipping in and out of food shops, tasting local specialties and learning fun history.

You’ll rub shoulders with locals in one-of-a-kind food shops and the daily farmers market, tasting the region’s seasonal sweet and savory specialties. Your guide will explain the history behind the city’s food traditions while meeting the families who run the best addresses in town. The tour takes place in the 700-year-old market square, where you’ll discover the seasons, tasting fruits and vegetables harvested just the day before.

The entire 3-hour tour includes all tastings at historic food merchants (pastries, Calisson candy etc..) and in the market (olives, lavender honey, fresh cheese and local hams) and a stop for a drink (either artisanal coffee or local rosé wine) as well as seasonal recipes and a map, which are handed out at the end.

Suggestion: Explore Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence’s city center is a lively maze of narrow streets, shaded squares, and elegant architecture. At its heart lies the Cours Mirabeau, a tree-lined avenue perfect for strolling and people-watching at one of its many cafés.

The old town is filled with colorful markets, boutique shops, and artisan bakeries. Discover the majestic Saint-Sauveur Cathedral, explore the Musée Granet’s impressive art collections, or follow in Cézanne’s footsteps to his preserved studio. Fountains decorate nearly every square, adding charm and a sense of calm. With its vibrant atmosphere and cultural richness, the city center offers an unforgettable Provençal experience.
