The handsome city of Ajaccio, known as the “imperial city” is the capital of Corsica. Despite its starring role in world history, it kept its small-town charm and can be visited in one day.

In summer, there is more than a whiff of the Côte d’Azur to its pastel-toned, cafe-filled historic core and the trendy waterfront promenade buzzing with beachgoers by day and party people later on. But it is in the tangled old-town lanes that the specter of Napoléon Bonaparte looms largest, with the house where he was born in 1769, Maison Bonaparte, now serving as a museum to his memory.

Established by Napoléon’s uncle, cardinal Joseph Fesch (1763–1839), Ajaccio’s superb art museum Palais Fesch-Musée des Beaux-Arts holds the largest French collection of Italian paintings outside the Louvre. Masterpieces by Titian, Fra Bartolomeo, Veronese, Bellini, and Botticelli. Also, worth seeing are the works of local Corsican painters.

The idyllic old town of Ajaccio is particularly charming. From the citadel, built 500 years ago, you can stroll directly to the picturesque marina. Be tempted by the colorful bustling Corsican markets inviting you to browse and taste. Fresh produce, cheeses, ham, native olive oil, and sweet treats are offered with the typical Corsican eloquence, the Corsican merchants are happy to invite you to a tasting.

You can set off for the Domaine des Milelli. The estate, on the heights of Ajaccio, is surrounded by a 12-hectare century-old olive grove and holds the former country home of Napoleon Bonaparte. Today it is a public park offering beautiful walks. However, the country house, a protected monument, is not open to visitors.

Suggestion : Goat’s and ewe’s milk cheese visit

Whatever you do, make sure you don’t miss something really special alongside the road from Ajaccio to Sagone, just before San Sebstianu pass. There is a house standing way up high above the wild, unspoiled Pevani Valley and land that stretches all the way down to the sea.. This is the home of Monsieur Manenti – or at least it was. The name has been kept but the property now belongs to Maurice and Marcel Wheatcroft, who look after the surrounding land and some two hundred goats and two hundred ewes, all of Corsican stock.
The farm is over a hundred years old and time seems to have stood still here. From hand milking to producing cheese including Brocciu, THE Corsican speciality, and Tomme. Everything is done here using traditional methods and know-how, as evidenced by the copper cauldrons and cane moulds.
“Our aim is to carry on doing our best here, with all the drawbacks and advantages of our trade. We may modernise perhaps, but without losing our identity in the process. The most important thing is to preserve the flavour and character of our produce.”Made from either sheep’s or goat’s milk, the Brocciu here is authentic and full of flavour, the cheeses delicious, and the Tomme full-bodied and rustic.

The Museum of Corsican History opened in July 1997 and is housed in the old Citadel.

The Restonica Valley is probably one of the most beautiful and dramatic areas in Corsica, with its glacial gorges carved into the granite cliffs, which are covered in verdant pine forests. The valley takes its name from the Restonica River, which flows through the cliffs and gorges to the many pools and lakes, dotted around and about, making this a popular place to walk and picnic. The two most well-known lakes Lac de Melo and the spectacular Lac de Capitello are accessible by foot via a rather strenuous and in some places steep path.

Guided mountain hike to the “Cascade des Anglais”

Your mountain guide will take you to a unique glacial valley. After a two-hour walk along an ancient path, formerly used for the seasonal move of sheep and goats, you will reach a magic spot with vestiges of ancient sheep farms, dozing on the shore of a mountain torrent shaded by a large beech grove – the ideal moment for a break and a refreshing dip in the “cascade”!
