Beaune is Burgundy's wine capital, but it has a lot more to offer. Don't miss the wineries, the 12th-century Notre-Dame Basilica, and the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune. The former charitable almshouse was founded in 1443 and is a reference of Burgundian architecture with its enameled tile roofs. Today it is a museum with a rich selection of paintings, tapestries, and furniture.

These prestigious wines are sold at the most famous wine charity auction in the world under the name of "Vente des Hospices de Beaune". Originally, the Hospice de Beaune was found as a hospital for the poor. Today it is one of France’s most-renowned historic monuments with spectacular glazed-tile roofs.

In the afternoon you drive through Alésia, a famous battleground where Julius Cesar beat Vercingétorix’s Gaul army in 52BC. Next up is Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, recognized as one of “the most beautiful villages in France” and the site where Chocolat was filmed. Visit the Anis de Flavigny candy factory.


A tour of the 12th-century Fontenay Abbey follows. Visit the ornamental gardens and follow the trail of the Cistercian monks at this UNESCO world heritage site. Alternatively, stroll through the village of Vézelay and enjoy a spectacular view over the valley. Here you can visit the Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, also listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
